Common percentage examples

  • Percentage of a number: 15% of 200 is 30.
  • Part as a percentage: 45 out of 60 is 75%.
  • Percentage increase: A value rising from 80 to 100 increases by 25%.
  • Percentage decrease: A value falling from 100 to 80 decreases by 20%.
  • Discount: A 20% discount on 150 reduces the price by 30, leaving 120 before taxes or other charges.
  • Percentage difference: 80 and 100 have a difference of about 22.222222%, using their average of 90 as the base.

Percentage change versus percentage difference

Percentage change measures movement from an original value to a new value. Its comparison base is the original value, so reversing the numbers can change the result. Percentage difference treats the two values equally and divides their absolute difference by their average. Use percentage change for price changes or growth over time; use percentage difference when neither value is the starting point.

Percentages versus percentage points

A rate moving from 4% to 5% rises by 1 percentage point. Its relative increase is 25%. To calculate that relative increase, select percentage change and enter 4 as the original value and 5 as the new value.

Limitations and rounding

Results are displayed with up to six decimal places. Internal calculations use unrounded values. The percentage-of and part-as-percentage options accept signed numbers; the change, discount and difference options use the nonnegative-value rules shown above. A zero denominator has no defined result. This tool does not add sales tax, fees or currency conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Can a percentage exceed 100%?

Yes. For example, 150 is 150% of 100. The discount option is limited to 100% because a larger discount would create a negative final price.

Can I calculate a change from zero?

No. A percentage change divides by the original value, so a zero starting value makes the calculation undefined. You can still state the absolute increase.

Are my numbers saved?

The calculator processes your values in your browser. Its calculation code does not send or store your inputs.
